In My 58th Year I Learned to Love

Love, that puller on our souls,
That craving from the inmost parts,
A searching that will never cease,
Desire, with dangerous disregard,
To gain the goal for which we seek,

Slowly, tentatively, grudging,
Incrementally, I awoke,
Painfully, arthritic, slow.

Truth became more clear,
It’s “Taking” that takes away,
But “Giving” that draws love near.

I held true love in shaking hands,
Pulling it to my troubled breast,
And then, on letting go,
Found that I had loved it best.

Emptiness left a holy space,
My love, one with the universe at last,
In my 58th year I learned to love,
My selfishness is past.
